Ben Hecht (February 28, 1894 – April 18, 1964) was one of the virtually 100% prolific of all Hollywood screenwriters, even though he professed disdain for the motion picture industry, and the human rights and Zionism activist.
Life and career in Hollywood
Hecht was raised within Racine, Wisconsin, and as a young man moved to Chicago, where he became the newsperson &, one of these days, a short-story writer & novelist. He sooner or later landed inside New York, where he met movie mogul David O. Selznick. Them were to exist as womb-to-tomb friends & frequent collaborators.
Hecht yet moved to Hollywood, in which he written Josef von Sternberg's gangster story Underworld in 1927, and won an Oscar for his work at a number one Academy Awards presentation. His best known operate was a stage comedy The Front Page, which he wrote with frequent collaborator Charles MacArthur. It was number one translated to film within 1931 and three other days, virtually all notably when Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday in 1940. Great deal of Hecht's late operate wwhen uncredited, as he worked as a "script doctor".
Hecht got an early talk show on television in the New York area in the 1950s and 1960s.
Jewish and anti-Holocaust activism
Ben Hecht was a great supporter of Zeev Jabotinsky and the right-wing Revisionist Zionism movement of Menachem Begin. He later on wrote & published a book Perfidy, dramatizing the failure to rescue Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, and a roles of the Zionist leader Rudolf Kastner and others in high leadership positions therein affair, which was the subject of a famed libel trial when Kastner sued Grunwald, world health organization got accused him of complicity sustaining a Nazis. In this test, although a court at first held that these accusations were right, in appeal it was nemine contradicente held that it were largely untrue or even unfair & a finding of fact was reversed. A outbreak remains extremely controversial (watch e.g. [http://motlc.wiesenthal.com/text/x12/xr1230.html]; [http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20050110&c=4&s=kimmerling ]; [http://chareidi.shemayisrael.com/MTS63features.htm]; & [http://www.marxists.de/middleast/brenner/ch25.htm]) & these are non always accepted that Hecht's account may be accepted when fair.
Hecht as well opposed a social-democratic policies of Israel's first both prime ministers David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Sharett, and of the Jewish Agency for what he regarded as their complicit silence & co-operation by having a British when you took World War II in not doing thomas more to rescue Jews & open a doors of Palestine to Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany and occupied Europe. He spoke retired against a deficiency of interest around saving a Jews trapped around Europe during the Holocaust. He purchased newspaper advertising inside Up to date York's newspapers to publicize a fate of Hitler's victims. Within of these such "advertisement" by owning a headline: "FOR SALE: 70,000 JEWS AT $50 APIECE GUARANTEED HUMAN BEINGS" explaining that trio & a half million dollars would rescue the so cornered Romanian Jews (quoted in his operate Perfidy, pp. 191-192).
